Why does Guyanatimesgy.com continue to suck?

August 18, 2008

Well, I keep looking for the something different or anything different as a matter of fact between Guyanatimesgy, Stabroek News, Guyana Chronicle, and Kaieteur News. Stabroek News, Guyana Chronicle and Kaieteur has been out for quite a number of years now, so why the new Guyana times gy. Beats me! The online version sucks to no end. The article does not have a different appeal at all plus, I don’t get why you have to tell your audience that you are the best news team in Guyana. If your readers are intelligent enough, they will deduce that themselves and comeback for more. Guess, the best news team in Guyana did not figure out that one as yet. The site I must say does have potential, but it put together very well. The owners of this site need some innovative thinkers that understand global marketing and how to infiltrate the information market; that they have failed at from the inception of this project.

Carifesta X: The Guyanese Government needs to up their game

August 8, 2008

An editorial posted on www.stabroeknews.com by Wesley Kirton notes that the press releases for Carifesta X posted on the Carifesta website are poorly written a consists of a plethora of grammatical errors. I agree. The point of Wesley’s note was that this substandard display of public relations material only serves to negatively impact the community that is the recipient of the information. The simple message it sends is that our English is off and we don’t care and that might have been ok of we were located in Russia or China. But that not the case. Secondly, display of pubic information creates a permanent image in the mind of an outsider looking who is trying while we are trying to create a global image and atmosphere in Guyana. Read more

Rape 101 in Guyana - The Purpose of this article is to Raise Awareness about Rape and Sexual Assault.

July 23, 2008

Every five minutes somewhere in the America’s/ Caribbean someone is sexually assaulted. If you have a friend who has been a victim please encourage them to report it.

Very often we would read in the Kaieteur News, Guyana Chronicle and Stabroek News that non-stranger, friends, acquaintances and intimate partners perpetrated most sexual assaults. Rape, attempted rape and sexual assault are one of the most under-reported crimes in Guyana and the Caribbean. However, the rapist of-course will walk free due to “high - connections” and bribery; the few women that report a rape chances are: an arrest will never be made, no prosecution, no felony conviction and 15 out of 16 rapist will walk free.

The horrors experienced in Guyana by many young inmates especially those who are convicted of non-violent offences have to undergo the imaginable and currently it’s a major issue in the country. Prison rape is devastating, detrimental and causes health problems such as: HIV/Aids, STD, depression, low self-esteem etc. Meanwhile most sexual victims are more likely to suffer from depression, suffer from traumatic stress disorder, more likely to abuse alcohol and drugs and contemplate suicide.

Students from University of Guyana were caught selling “date-rape” drug on the tarmac, on the streets, lacing other students’ drink until one girl died due to unknown reasons. Until today there has been no proper report from the media, University of Guyana or a post mortem report, assumptions were the girl drink was laced with drugs she bought from the canteen which she drank and passed away shortly after.

Students have access to “date-rape drug” which is legal in Guyana and is being sold as a sleeping aid. Drugs that are used on victims to assist in sexual assault are: GHB [gamma hydroxybutyric acid], Rophypnol [flunitrazepam] and Ketamine [ketamine hydrochloride]. These pills/ powder form drugs have no odor, color, dissolve quickly and take faster effects when served with alcohol. It is harder to think clearly, resist sexual or physical assault or evaluate a potentially dangerous situation when taking these drugs. Some victims claimed that the drug help them to relax and giving them a dream like feeling while others claimed that it causes unconsciousness, seizures, tremors, sweating, slow heart rate, losing sense of time and identity, numbness, aggressive behavior and slurred speech.

Contrary to the fact that rapist are hiding in the bushes and parking lots, more than 70% of the rapes committed by someone who is known to the victim. A sexual crime reported within 24 hours has a much greater chance of providing sufficient evidence and conviction. However without evidence, reporting a crime is extremely important. If you have been a victim of rape, attempted rape or sexual assault…USE YOUR VOICE…SPEAK UP… REPORT IT TODAY AND REMEMBER RAPE IS A CRIME AND ITS NOT YOUR FAULT!!!

How many help and shelter or crisis hotlines are there in Guyana for battered woman/ victims? Can someone please tell me? What is the government doing? Meanwhile the crime rate keeps on escalating and the so called leaders still believe that there is hope…the truth is there is No Hope For Guyanese. Everyone is trying all ways and means to get out of that country. The fact will always remained that justice will not be served.

Is Freedom of Speech being Suppressed or Infringed Upon? The dilemma between CN Sharma and the Guyanese government on the matter of offending “good taste”

April 10, 2008

The question I am asking is: where and when should freedom of speech be limited or restrained and where should the line should be drawn as what is considered “good taste” and more over what is considered good taste? This blog is in response to an article posted in Stabroek News dated 4/9/2008 in regards to a seemingly serious situation that has placed CN Sharma (Guyana’s channel six owner and host of “Voice of the People program” at the desk of President Bharrat Jagdeo and Dr. Roger Luncheon who is the Head of the Presidential Secretariat (HPS). The Non Noteworthy News

December 16, 2007

This morning I stumbled upon an article published Saturday, December 15th 2007 titled “CULTURE BOX, King’s Jewellery ad makes the cut.”

Now before I divulge into the specifics of the article I must comment on the constant erroneous grammatical errors that editors of this national publication fail to notice prior to printing for distribution and for this very reason I question the validity of good solid unbiased reporting. It seems to me that the publication is bent on quantity rather than quality (a fill the page so to speak initiative)… I take it as “our readers are not so intelligent anyway so why bother to get right. Just publish the damn thing, they would never notice. It’s all about increasing the profit margin” Read more

Critique to “Being green” Published 10/27/2007 Stabroek News.

November 7, 2007

“Being green” in short addresses the issue dealing with the significant growth in waste that the world produces daily and what some industrialized nations are doing to combat the predicament such as the UK and the US. But what caught my attention is the reference to Guyana’s waste accumulation ratio to that of the UK and US. Moreover, the article mentions a move by the Guyanese government to conservation forestry and turning a blind eye the more eminent issue at hand which is the garbage laden city streets and dormant drainage systems.
