Assalamu Alaikum [Peace & Blessings Be Upon You]. Eid Mubaraak, Eid Mubaraak, Eid Mubaraak!!!

October 1, 2008

Muslims across the world will be celebrating Eid-ul-Fitr on October 01st, 2008. Eid ul-Fitr or Eid, is a Muslim holiday that marks the end of Ramadaan [fasting]. Because this day depends on the sighting of the moon or scientific calculations, the exact date varies from country to country. Muslims will wake up early in the morning and have a small breakfast, shower and dress in their best/ new clothes to attend a special Eid prayer that is performed in a congregation at Mosques or open areas.

Before the Eid prayer begins, every Muslim who is able must pay Zakat [charity/ alms] for the month of Ramadan. This is about 2 kg of a basic foodstuff (wheat, barley, dates, raisins, etc.), or its cash equivalent- usually collected at the mosque by the needy prior to the start of the Eid prayer. It can be given at any time during the month of Ramadaan also.

The Eid prayer is followed by the khutbah [sermon] and then followed with a dua [ prayer raising your hands and asking almighty god for forgiveness, mercy and help for the plight of Muslims across the world. The khutbah also instructs Muslims as to the rituals of Eid and charity. It is customary to embrace the persons sitting besides you, and wishing them Eid Mubaraak [ Eid Greetings three times].

It is believed to be the month in which the Holy Quran was revealed to Angel Gabriel, which was later revealed to Prophet Muhammad. Ramadan ends with the holiday Eid ul- Fitr, on which feasts are held.

Religion: An Introspective Analysis

August 4, 2008

I know some of you who are reading this and maybe wondering if I’m an atheist, does it matter? Actually I’m not but I don’t categorize myself in any religion because I don’t believe in things that are just supposed to be believed in because others say so. I abide by my morals and try to be as honest and loving as a normal being. I put out into the world what I would like to receive and I’m never ashamed of the mistakes or situations I get into because others may talk about it and call it “sinful”. Seriously, enjoy your life… because then you’d be one miserable person paranoid about what everyone else is thinking about. I focused on religion this time but there are many topics that make people feel the same way, coercing others to believe what “they” do, in the name if “God” (or whatever you call your imminent power). People go to wars and horrific things and use the name of “God” to make others do the same. I wonder if no one ever thought about the notion of “God” would we still be the society we are today. Would there still be chaos in the mix – underhandedly lying to others how one religion/belief is the ‘right one’ because “religion is supposed to be a beautiful thing”? My grandfather used to tell me, we have 5 fingers and neither of them are the same length… just as our fingers, each one of us are different with our own beliefs, which we should respect. Read more

My Reality of God

September 27, 2007

I came into this world, into a Christian home.  My father a devout Christian and my mother after marriage followed him in same.  We were fervent church goers and honored the bible as the words handed down to man by God.  My father practiced his faith assiduously and inculcated his herd of three in the wisdom that god had intended to share.  We practiced family devotion sometimes after supper.  During this time my sister led in the hymns, my mother read the scripture, I read from the Daily Word, and my father closed the ceremony by construing the reading followed with a protracted and ardent prayer.
