President of Guyana assures CARIFESTA workers will be paid
Published on Tuesday, November 4, 2008
GEORGETOWN, Guyana (GINA): Guyana’s President Bharrat Jagdeo during a press conference on Saturday urged local Caribbean Festival of Arts (CARIFESTA) participants to bear with the Administration as accounting procedures are finalised. He assured that by the end of this week, this process should be completed and they would receive their payments.
The president was responding to queries on the issue, which has been in the public domain for some time now and which has seen some of the festival’s participants protesting for their payments, which they claim they have not received from the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, though the event has concluded over two months now. Real Funny: WITHDRAWAL by El Dorado Rebel
October 21, 2008
The withdrawal symptoms manifested themselves as soon as we touched down…..the silence of the airport, no planes parked anywhere…the breeze whistling through the drab looking buildings…where were we?
From the busy airports that we had passed through that day…the silence of this one defeated one…repairs it seems are always going on there, in full sight too but the improvements were not seen. One lady previously smiling, “sucked” her teeth. Read more
Humor: Man gets two years for stealing sister‘s DVD–seriously
September 25, 2008
This is too funny not to share. I wonder what the ignorant Judge would have given the man if he had stolen DVDs too. Now what kind of DVD player is worth 600 USD. This Judge is absolutely out of touch with reality.
A man who stole a DVD player from his sister was sentenced to two years imprisonment when he appeared before Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle on Tuesday at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.
Shawn Gathers, 34, of 4 Lamaha Street, Georgetown, pleaded guilty to simple larceny.
It is alleged that on September 17 in Georgetown, Gathers stole a DVD player from Keron Ragnauth, valued $130, 000.
The prosecution stated that on the day in question Gathers’ sister secured her home and accompanied her mother to the market.
When she got back her other brother told her that Gathers, who lives in a house at the back of the yard, had gone into her home and was seen running away with the DVD player.
The sister said that she made a check in the house and discovered that the DVD player was indeed missing. She subsequently made a report to the Alberttown Police Station and Gathers was later arrested.
The sister went on to say that Gathers took the police to the person who he had sold the player to but at present it is not working.
Gathers stated that on the day in question he was at home and “I din had anyting foh eat so I sell the DVD player to buy something.”
He said that he sold it for $5,000 to a man in Albouystown and it was recovered after he was arrested.
The magistrate then sentenced him to two years imprisonment.

Breaking News: Guyana Fine Man Dead
August 28, 2008
GEORGETOWN, Guyana: The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) has reportedly shot and killed Guyana’s most wanted fugitive Rondell Fineman Rawlins during a shootout on Thursday.
According to unconfirmed reports, Rawlins, along with a gang of men attempted to rob the GDF base at Camp Stephenson on the Linden Soesdyke highway on Thursday morning and was killed during the resulting shooting.
Reportedly killed along with Rawlins was multi-murder accused “Skinny”.
We all know the story of Fine man and his gang when the two massacres occurred in Bartica and Lusignan. I bet Fineman tried to get his hands on some weapons to use at one of the Carifesta venues. Well I am happy he is out for good and Guyanese can feel a bit safer. Who knows what he was planning to do with those weapons. In the end, Guyana Defense Force and the Police Force could not get Fine Man; He had to come to them.

All CARIFESTA X venues except the National Stadium now Ticket Free
THE CARIFESTA Secretariat yesterday announced that all CARIFESTA X performance venues except for the National Stadium will not require a ticket.
Persons are, however, advised that entry to events will be on a first come, first served basis.
This decision took effect from yesterday. - Guyana Chronicle
It seems like Guyanese living in Guyana can actually get to see and partake in some of the Carifesta festivities. But the question is how many will? According to our sources living in Guyana, Carifesta flames went up in smoke on Friday night where many across the nation and other parts of the Caribbean switched off their television sets in the midst of the proceedings. Moreover, it seems like the Guyana Chronicle and Stabroek News are at odds with each other. Both prints are running opposite stories. Guyana Chronicle staying on the positive side and Stabroek News on the negative side. What’s going on? That’s the question. I’ve watch a few of the videos on YouTube and Stabroek news, and the scenes were as ghetto as ever. If what I saw was not a display of disorganization then, I don’t know what is. But Guyana again is not ready to host any type of regional event at all and I hope other Caribbean nations have noticed the same too. What was Frank Anthony thinking when he thought he support an event of such magnitude? I do hope for the remainder of Carifesta, working Guyanese actually get to attend some of these events because is a time for all Guyanese to enjoy, not the privileged few.

Increasing Poverty in Guyana is evermore Promising
June 4, 2008
According to Kaieteur News June 4th 2008, the price of gasoline in Guyana is now $1,018 GYD per gallon. To my estimates, that amount equates to $5 USD. In the US, the price per gallon of 87 Octane (low grade) is about $4.13 cents per gallon self serve. As it is, the increase in the US has caused dramatic changes in the way people commute everyday. It is difficult for many of us in the US to drive comfortably as the price on the global market continues to skyrocket. I cannot imagine the situation Guyanese are experiencing right now in Guyana. With the increased cost of food globally and now the price of gasoline, Guyanese living in Guyana stand to suffer even more. Read more
Global Warming - Is Guyana prepared?
May 14, 2008
The earthquake in central China killing thousands of people is just another indication that the treat of global warming is real. From continuous natural disasters occurring over the past 5 years of tsunami to melting glaciers, it is certainly putting the fear into everyone. Are our leaders preparing us and our future generations from the effects of global warming? The real question I pose, is Guyana prepared? Read more
