Mahendrapaul Doodnauth (Guyanese) of Ontario Canada busted with $40 Million of cocaine in pepper sauce boxes

December 24, 2008

Some CDN$40M of cocaine was found by Canadian authorities in cartons of Guyana pepper sauce and a businessman was to appear in an Ontario court yesterday charged with importing and conspiracy to traffic in the illegal substance

The cocaine was seized by Canadian police following months of investigation which saw them tracking the shipment from New Brunswick and letting the accused, identified as 45-year-old Mahendrapaul Doodnauth of Sequin Court in Etobicoke, take possession of it with only a small amount of the cocaine still in the packaging.

According to Canadian media reports the bust is said to be the biggest in the history of the province of Ontario. Doodnauth is said to be the owner of Caribbean International Food Distributors in the town of Etobicoke.

Doodnauth was nabbed as he offloaded the boxes at a storage facility.
While none of the reports gave a date as to when the shipment would have left Guyana or any other information on the Guyana link, reports said the pepper shipment arrived in the country on board the Tropic Canada in Saint John, New Brunswick on December 8. The freight ship reportedly regularly transports goods between Saint John and the Caribbean.

Media reports said that the drug was inserted into the cardboard dividers inside 551 boxes out of the 1,250 that were carrying the pepper sauce. The cocaine was uncovered by border guards during their inspection of the freighter. Investigators used an X-ray machine and a sniffer dog to find the drugs.

In total, they found 276 kilogrammes of cocaine which, when cut and resold by street-level drug dealers, could amount to as much as 400 kilogrammes of the drug.

The guards removed most of the cocaine, but allowed two kilogrammes to be delivered to Caribbean International Food Distributors and when the boxes were loaded into a storage facility on December 19, Doodnauth was arrested.

Doodnauth has been charged with importing cocaine, conspiracy to import cocaine and possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking and was expected to appear in court via video link yesterday afternoon.

The bust was the conclusion of an investigation, dubbed “Project Falcon” which began in Durham when officers began to investigate the source of cocaine found in the possession of local street gang members.

The investigation was led by members of the Durham Regional Police Gang Enforcement Unit, the Canada Border Services Agency and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

“Our partners in Canada Border Services haven’t seen this level of sophistication in terms of packaging,” said Durham Police Service Chief Constable, Mike Ewles in the Toronto National Post. At a news conference yesterday, Detective Sergeant Mario Lessard showed reporters how the packs of cocaine each containing 180 grammes had been carefully stashed in the cardboard panels. The cocaine was said to be high-quality and around 80% purity.

According to newsdurhamregion.com, by the middle of this year the cops had begun surveillance of a suspect and the pepper shipment was intercepted on December 8.

Pepper sauce is the latest of local commodities to be ensnared in the cocaine trade in recent years. Water coconuts, molasses, wood, rum and a variety of other items have been intercepted abroad with cocaine. These interceptions have failed to crack networks in Guyana and prosecutions have proceeded overseas where persons have been held.

I know Mr. Doodnauth, he’s not a bad person or a gang member. he’s a very hard working man and also a loving, caring husband and father. I dont believe these news alligations. I dont think he has the ability to commit such crime. Maybe he was set up. That is my openion

  2. Teresa on December 25th, 2008 8:34 pm

In regards to Mr Doodnauth head line. To my knowledge he is just an ordinary person trying to earn a daily cash like others do. Just like others having their own business by receiving product or package from different country or cites. How can he be aware of receiving cocaine in his package. I strongly belive that he is not guilty he is very much been setup and wrongfully been judge before knowing the entire situation.

  3. avita on December 25th, 2008 8:41 pm

i know mr doodnauth, for over 20 years he is a very quiet and nice guy, every story has two side, this side that you guys know is the media side but there is another side and only god, him and his family know the truth please don’t judge

  4. Sarah on December 25th, 2008 8:47 pm

But is there a chance that he did it? It seems like there is no way this man could have done such a thing according to annie.

  5. Sam on December 25th, 2008 8:51 pm

Mr.Doodnauth may not be guilty. Not everything stated is ture, so get your facts straight. Sometimes the media is like women gossiping: false news in order to spice things up.

  6. Sarah on December 25th, 2008 9:13 pm

Why don’t you all just wait and see what actually happens with the case. If he is not guilty, then hopefully justice will prevail. If he is guilty beyond doubt, then let the law handle him. My experience in life has been that don’t always think you know someone, because the fact is that you really don’t. It was Carl Yung who clearly noted in his manifesto that we all put on a mask when we interact with the outside world. It is only when we are within the confines of our own, that we remove this mask.

I agree with you…. You dont judge someone cause the media always make things to be bad…. I personally know Mr. Doodnauth for 10 years now he’s a very good husband, father and friend …. i dont believe he did that … i think he was setup.

  8. Sue on December 26th, 2008 3:52 am

i know … i think this poor guy mahendrapaul doodnauth was set up… i really dont think he did that crime…. i am his neighbour i know he’s a very nice person and him and his wife work hard for their living…. He was set up.

seems as if you folks are in denial. of course he was a good man! Hitler was a vegetarian as well
and did y’all read that this ‘good man’ was being monitored for close to one whole year!! why? were they observing his humanitarian side?

  10. philip on December 26th, 2008 12:12 pm

Because to some people just don’t get it. Some think because he is a humanitarian, he can do no wrong. Sometimes the humanitarian is the cover for the actual person.

  11. margaret on December 26th, 2008 9:35 pm

yes i know some humanitarians does have cover ups..but what about the innicet paying for the guilty???? he was set up…..alot of caribbean pple always uses other pple names and business all the time..have u ever heard of identy theft?
its alot more common these days…..just wait 4 the truth 2 come out ……i guess u will never understand until some shit like that happens 2 u…….

  12. Jennifer on December 26th, 2008 10:03 pm

Where is his lawyer when you need him?
He is just a suspect to this hold up, Why are people start over re-acting for just wrongfully info? Like give a man a break its the holiday. His poor family must be worry and miss him around this time. Think about this the officer should be more consern where its coming from and who is preparing these package or containers? Investigation should be taken place more in Guyana..

Remember - there is two sides to a person- the good side he presents to the world and the other often the less desirable is hidden from the world.

Brilliant Sunita! Just leave the world alone and all will be done to you and for you. It seems like you are the typical Guyanese…you are only affected by occurences that personally affect you. What if you were the mother of the child that uses this product. How would that make you feel then.

  21. Punjabi on December 28th, 2008 1:36 am

This guy cant be trusted….obviously his image is just a cover up….he received these things himself….what about “RENTED WAREHOUSE”….I’m pretty sure before charging him the police did a well rounded investigation….this $40 million shipment was not the first…..funny I say this…because there was another one on the way….the FEDS just caught another $14million shipment of cocaine headed for innocent DOODNAUTH….do you really think the FEDS…local police…opp. rcmp….just went and charged this guy…without gathering evidence that would stick on him in court…..I’ll bet you he’s guilty….at lease not there is over $50million of cocaine off the streets of Toronto and surrounding areas…that would have been consumed by peoples sons, daughters, mother, fathers, and relatives:)

  22. Andrew on December 28th, 2008 1:39 am

    Punjabi,
I referenced your last note to Sunita….Hope she gets it now that you’ve said it in many words,

  23. Joe on December 29th, 2008 11:37 am

What do you all have to say now about this guy’s innocence? Another shippment linked to his warehouse.

  24. Sam on December 29th, 2008 4:53 pm

i think this guy is being set up cause how can he order another container when he’s locked up in jail… maybe he has enamies and in guyana you can fake other names… have u ever think that maybe someone wants him away for a long time.

  26. Sunita on December 29th, 2008 5:02 pm

Mr. Punjabi i think ur in the wrong news…. about the wharehouse rental… if a large amount of goods are being delivered to someone would you rent a storage to pack it…. dum dum…

  27. Andrew on December 29th, 2008 5:36 pm

    Hi Sunita,
Thanks for the warm reply. Don’t fall off the chair you are sitting on. The reply was about the amount of cocaine that would have been added to the streets of Toronto and probably elsewhere. Sad to see that you can grasp that point. It seems like you are letting feels get the best of you. Be objective and ask yourself if there is a possibility that this gentleman might have been involved.

  28. Andrew on December 29th, 2008 5:37 pm

Sunita,,,have you been keeping up with modern news…where warehouses and other rental properties are used to store illicit substances?

  29. Andrew on December 29th, 2008 5:39 pm

    Sam,
Maybe there are others involved Sam.

  30. Boyo on December 29th, 2008 6:18 pm

i know this man ………………… i know him inside out………he will never do such things ,,,,,period! this has to be a set up…..he has a family that he loves and really works hard to take care off.as one commenter suggested a story has two sides….they just can’t hold this innocent man ……they have to be concern of the persons packetting and sending these containers.

  31. Sunita on December 30th, 2008 11:11 pm

i agree with you boyo…. see these people does not know this man … the police is just holding him cause the container was send in his name and company’s name. You people should all shut ur mouth and just wait and see this man will set free. cause they will find the real people as u can see in stabroke news they do have the person that send this container. Trust me Mr. Doodnauth was set up no douth… He is just being held for his safty….

  32. Andrew on December 30th, 2008 11:50 pm

So will those boxes be distributed to one location? How will the boxes be retrive after the peper is delivered to the retail location. Do retailers buy by case or unit?

  33. Dante on December 31st, 2008 11:34 am

Hey, its plain and simple. All the top cartels are really nice and loving guys, thats a big part of the business that has to be perfected to earn trust. I feel for the family of the accused but check this out.
He picked up the merchandise and didnt have any cheap labour working with him at the time.
His brother has since disappeared, why will he go undercover if they know nothing about this shipment.
Its holiday time and its prime time for so call “BIG RUNNINGS”
And lastly I called someone I know out of curiousity pretty well who doesnt know that I know he is a in house carrier (Ontario area). He told me he knew Mahendra pretty well and when I asked him if he knew about this operation he said that he think they may have got him.
Birds of a feather always flock together.
I will not be judge and juror for him but I think there is a lot of circumstancial evidence here.

well said my friend, he being doing this shit for years now, heaed he have a garrage of toys (what the drug lords call vehicles). I am an indian but is so shameful to see all indians involved in this kind of nonsense. All of these on here who is supporting him and his Lieutanents are living in denial or are just plain receipients of the drug trade in one way or the other, lots of info leaking out, the customs man talking nonstop. It is Roger Khan cocaine just got busted, lots of people panicing and trembling. The columbians come for them money last week and the swiss house man beg for 2 weeks more to pay. Now the juggling start, the Barakat kid is a know drug dealer with direct links to Khan. The Nymrud man running for Veneauela to tell the Columbian bosses who mess up, shit hitting the fan. I hope they use the right interogation methods to get max info.
Lock them up one by one and let the foreign jurisdiction try them.
Keiteure news boss man, you are next my friend.

I am one of Mr.dodnauths long time investors and yes he was involved in this terrible crime, in an effort to acquire extra capital, and with that west-Indian greed mentality he opt for the illegal way. Being a business owner myself, I’ve also participated in a few get-rich skims in order to redeem a little extra cash..and we’re talking in the 6 figure ball park, but i knew when to quit..sadly Mr.Dodnauth didn’t.
In the end he is guilty and will serve time pertaining to that of the CDL. But I’m Guyanese and i still drive a Corvette HA.
