Category 2 Hurricane Paloma Heads Towards Cayman Islands And Cuba

Paloma, which has maximum sustained winds of up to 75mph (120km/h), is the 16th tropical storm of the Atlantic storm season and the eighth hurricane. The Miami-based US Hurricane Center said Paloma “continues to rapidly organise” and that additional strengthening was likely, with the storm predicted to become a Category Two hurricane on Friday.At 0700 EST (0000 GMT ) Paloma was 165 miles (270km) south of Grand Cayman and about 280 miles (450km) west-southwest of Montego Bay in Jamaica.

Paloma is expected to become a category 2 hurricane on Friday and possibly reach a category 3 intensity by Saturday.Hurricane force winds extend outward up to 15 miles…30 km…from the center…and tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 70 miles…110 km. Paloma is expected to produce total rainfall accumulations of 5 to 10 inches of rain over the Cayman Islands with isolated maximum totals of 12 inches possible. The Cayman Islands authorities have urged residents not to leave storm preparations to the last minute.

PS: Heavy rainfall from four major storms [Fay, Gustav, Hanna and Ike] in August and September created fatal flooding and mudslides in an impoverished nation Haiti, killing over 800 people.
