Happy Eid To All Our Muslim Brothers and Sisters.

October 1, 2008

Happy Eid To All Our Muslim Brothers And Sisters Wednesday October 1st is declared a public holiday in Guyana and in many Muslim states around the world. Ramadaan takes place during the ninth month of the Islamic Calendar. It is believed to be the month in which the Holy Quran was revealed to Angel Gabriel, which was later revealed to Prophet Muhammad and ends with the holiday Eid ul- Fitr, on which feasts are held. During the month of Ramadaan[ September], many Muslims fasted and prayed to Allah [God] and our beloved prophet Muhammad. The Newspapers, television stations and the media aired special Eid- ul- Fitr programmes highlighting the significance of this holy day. All institutions in will be closed for Eid Celebrations and green moon and star flags waved atop of public and private buildings throughout Guyana and more so other parts of the world.

Today on Eid, Muslims wherever the could, got together and prepared and distributed meals by the thousand to schools, orphanages, widows, destitute homes, prisoners, disabled, handicap homes, mosques, neighbors and relatives. Some Muslims from affluent families donated money, clothing, footwear, medications and the necessary essentials to the needy.

After the Eid prayers, some people will pay visits to friends, relatives and to the graveyards [to clean their family graves and offer prayers to god, asking him to grant the deceased a place in heaven and forgive their past sins]. Various religious, social and cultural organizations held programmes on Eid-e-Milad and special prayers were offered for the prosperity, integrity and solidarity of Guyana.

The main congregation in Berbice held their worship at the Sunnatul Mosque where more than 1800 people from my community attended and offered prayers throughout the night and day sending peace and blessings to Allah and our Holy Prophet Muhammad. The speakers highlighted the congregations with aspects of the life and teachings of God and the Holy Quran.

The Imam advice us on upholding the sanctity of life and encouraged the Muslim community to do well and end past animosities. He then went to the Khutbah and led the congregational prayers, which was the central part of the worship. When the Imam declared Eid-ul- Fitr everyone hugged and greeted each other in brotherly and sisterly love. Eid Mubaraak…Eid Mubaraak…Eid Mubaraak….
