Assalamu Alaikum [Peace & Blessings Be Upon You]. Eid Mubaraak, Eid Mubaraak, Eid Mubaraak!!!

October 1, 2008

Muslims across the world will be celebrating Eid-ul-Fitr on October 01st, 2008. Eid ul-Fitr or Eid, is a Muslim holiday that marks the end of Ramadaan [fasting]. Because this day depends on the sighting of the moon or scientific calculations, the exact date varies from country to country. Muslims will wake up early in the morning and have a small breakfast, shower and dress in their best/ new clothes to attend a special Eid prayer that is performed in a congregation at Mosques or open areas.

Before the Eid prayer begins, every Muslim who is able must pay Zakat [charity/ alms] for the month of Ramadan. This is about 2 kg of a basic foodstuff (wheat, barley, dates, raisins, etc.), or its cash equivalent- usually collected at the mosque by the needy prior to the start of the Eid prayer. It can be given at any time during the month of Ramadaan also.

The Eid prayer is followed by the khutbah [sermon] and then followed with a dua [ prayer raising your hands and asking almighty god for forgiveness, mercy and help for the plight of Muslims across the world. The khutbah also instructs Muslims as to the rituals of Eid and charity. It is customary to embrace the persons sitting besides you, and wishing them Eid Mubaraak [ Eid Greetings three times].

It is believed to be the month in which the Holy Quran was revealed to Angel Gabriel, which was later revealed to Prophet Muhammad. Ramadan ends with the holiday Eid ul- Fitr, on which feasts are held.
