Continous Economic Adjustment is Needed
October 31, 2008
INTRODUCTION:
Many of us are closely monitoring the financial crisis. The interest rate has been cut in the US to one of the lowest in history - 1% Prime Rate. Here in Guyana, we have not seen any adjustment to any economic indicators.
The interest rate to borrow money from our banks is a whopping 16%. The excessive Value Added Tax (VAT) concerns have been ignored by the public sector.
It is about fixing the entire fiscal policy and tax system with a complete overhaul of how taxes are collected and spent in the country. Cutting personal income tax for a majority of our workers should be a major political decision now. Read more
Opposition Leader Robert Corbin Opposes Everything At Home. Wife writes mother-in-law
October 31, 2008
Leader of the opposition Roberto Corbin has a proclivity for shouting ‘NO’ to everything said at home and his wife, in deep disgust, has officially written her mother-in-law to complain, the maid revealed Thursday.
Speaking on condition of anonymity the cleaning maid said that Mrs. Corbin was so fed-up that she has invoked Standing Order Number 14 (suspension of all marital privileges). The maid reported that the problem began when Parliament resumed and she was listening from the top of the stairs when Corbin came home from Parliament one night and after being asked a question by his wife, rebuked her for asking “an oral question without notice.” He reportedly shouted that all questions were to be on the “order paper” and demanded a “personal explanation”. Technology Infusion
October 30, 2008
Introduction
When we discuss technology in a broad sense, most of us view it from the context of artifacts. (The manufactured objects of technological design: cell phones, IPods, computers etc) One does not think of technology as to its history, origin, and a meaning and purpose.
Technology has its origin from the word “techne,” which was derived from an Indo-European word — “teks”. The word “techne” means the techniques or methods of creating and improving things or artifacts. Since the concept of technology cannot be define as just the artifacts, we can say that “technology is not a collection of things, but rather a systemic and rational way of doing things; it is in general the organization of knowledge, people, and things to accomplish specific practical goals”. Is there a Guyanese Hindu Hypocrisy?
October 29, 2008
After reading this article in Kaieteur News, I am prompted to write my thoughts on Religion. First of all I would like my readers to understand - many who claim to be Hindus do not know - that Hinduism is not a religion. It is not even a system, but it is the term given to the various religions that took birth in Hindustan (India), and it ranges from the crudest animism (worship of the inanimate, giving soul to it) to idol worship, to agnosticism as in Budhism which did not survive in India because of the caste system , to the atheism of the Jain, to the worship of the incarnations of Vishnu, an aspect of the trinity, of which the other two are Bramha and Shiva, manifestations of the Supreme invisible Supersoul, to the loftiest concept Brahman, the Absolute without attributes, sheer consciousness and bliss, incomprehensible from which everything arises and the only permanence to which everything must return. Another thing that most Hindus do not know, and most will be unwilling to accept is that Jesus is accepted as an avatar by enlightened Hindus and has found a place in their pantheon of Gods and Godesses., manifestations of the one God, that preside over their lives. Love Saw Without Eyes
October 28, 2008
Some years ago I fortuitously came across a programme where two blind and deaf male and female were serving in an institution for the handicapped. It happened that one day these two individuals stumbled on each other in the hallway and instinctively held hands. The response was immediate - Love at first touch. This incident inspired me to write a poem, LOVE SAW WITHOUT EYES. Later they married and were interviewed by Barbara Walters. This couple, I found out in another programme was able to live by themselves and was even able to do their own cooking. Here is the poem: Read more
Happy Diwali To All
October 28, 2008
Today, Diwali is celebrated by Hindus, Jains and Sikhs across the globe as the “festival of Lights”. A more appropriate significance is “the new year of luck and wealth”; where the lights or lamps signify victory of good over the evil within every human being. Diwali is celebrated on the fifteenth day of the month Kartika.
Diwali is the homecoming of King Rama of Ayodhya after a 14-year exile in the forest, after he defeated the evil Ravana. The people of Ayodhya welcomed Rama by lighting rows of deeya[lamps] thus its name: Deepavali/Diwali.
In some countries Diwali is considered to be a national festival, and the aesthetic aspect of the festival is enjoyed by most Indians regardless of faith. On this day of Diwali, many wear new clothes and share sweets and snacks. Some Indian business communities start their financial year on Diwali and new account books are opened on this day.
The Great “Bowl Theory”
October 27, 2008
Don’t you sometimes feel like a show monkey on display for your family? It’s as if all they worry about is how you make them look in our society. No matter how great a dancer, musician, artist or any sorts of creative energy is indulged, they seem to snip it by ridiculing you of the “nonsense you create and do”. It seems as if expressing yourself is the true evil in our society.
Think of the time you had your last music recital, art show, poem read. Did your parents clap? Did they tell you how proud they were? Were they super excited when you brought home your trophy/award and it wasn’t in math? What makes me sad about this entire ordeal is that as culture, we are surrounded by the arts. How many of us are rhythmically inclined, every second you have you hum something that would be an amazing song but even in the back of your head, you don’t think its special enough. You ever wondered if you took that song to the next level and made it your own, took the time to give it your personality and then share it with others? Read more

The 60-year-old Hindu man says the formation appeared to bless and heal him. He says pain he suffered from a bone spur disappeared when the plant grew. Read more
