My recent US Airways Experience

September 28, 2008

I just returned to the US from the Caribbean and I flew on US Airways. I couldn’t believe that they now charge 1 USD for cup of cheap coffee. It’s bad enough that they charge 15USD one piece of luggage and $25 dollars for the second piece, now they are charging for a cup of coffee! This is absolutely sad to see what is happening to a great American industry. The airlines have gone to the dogs, just like the housing market. Everything seems to be getting destroyed in America, Just earlier today I read an article on Reuters which focused on the German Financial Minister weighing in on the US financial crisis. What was key according the German financial minister is the US will no longer be the financial superpower it one was? The world seems to be watching the US crumble due to its’ own greed; this point was also highlighted by the minister albeit in no so many words.
Why doesn’t US Airways charge you the price for your luggage when you are booking the flight? Once you are at the counter, you have no choice but to pay and that’s the catch. If US Airways were to tell passengers of the cost upfront, then maybe passengers would pack lighter. However, this would result in less revenue for the carrier. I find this very deceiving as I am sure to many other passengers who were surprised by the additional cost at the airport. As a frequent flyer my experience with airlines vary across the board so to say which one is better, I just simply cannot, But I will say that American Airlines is by far the worst airline I have used and I vowed to never use them again. American Airline simply suck at everything, from customer care baggage handling and everything in between.

You can thank jet blue for the airline mess. The 99c of the airline industry. It’s set up to be bankrupt in a day (any day now). Across the board they pay less- EVERYONE is less skilled (these guys are the leaders in the airline industry!). US air/ America West is still a real airline - It cannot compete with the bottom fedders. American has one of the best Mx programs in the industry. It’s sad to see the industry I spent twenty years in go thru this massive decapitation. It’s like the foreclosure crisis, only airline style- don’t expect it to get better!

“YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR” The traveling public wanted lower fairs for years….you have been paying 1964 prices even past the year 2000. Look at ads for the mid 1960’s. I guess your company still has 1960’s prices…..(not likely).
Now you can feel the pain of what it really cost to fly why do you think that the airline industry has lost billions over the years. Because the traveling public wants something for free. And the airlines have bent over and the employees of these airlines have bent over further. Next time you travel on an airline…..Thank them for the safe trip and tell them you enjoyed the service. And next time buy a First Class ticket and you will not have to pay for the coffee…..

The cost of travel is what it is because it is all about increasing profits for shareholders.

The cheap fares are like the bad loans. They cannot maintain the high load factor needed for normal/expected operations. So, when the low fares kick in- the “real” airlines feel the squeeze. The JetBlue (type) carrier will eventually choke itself. It ownes nothing! The leases are a time bomb. Their only purpose is to reinvent the industry (union busting). I could go on- but you guys get the point.

    Jetjocky,
The point of the article was to illuminate the silly practices airlines are adapting to.. It just simply makes travling much more cumbersome. What if an individual is traveling with two bags and do not have the funds to pay at the counter which equates to 40USD. This is not a question of what was paid for the ticket or about thanking the airline for a safe flight. It is about practices that are time consuming for the airlines and jsut reflects a negative light on the industry. Like i said, it absolutely sad to see what is happening to a great American industry.

if you went to a 99c store, purchased a broom- go home and break it. You would not complain! Think “outside the box” cause-effect. It’s all relevant. Adults work at real airlines, kids work at the “pretend” airlines.
Am I starting to sound like Chuck Mohan?
