How much I insanely loved the Dali exhibit at MoMA

September 19, 2008

Well, I’m sure those of you who are familiar with Dali’s work usually fawn over the persistence of time and other pieces, which I still love too. But this collection which I was surprised had a lot of work spanning his art life. MOMA even played the video collaboration he did with Walt Disney which was an animation that warped into each of Dali’s famous paintings. I didn’t get to take pictures of the video and or the paintings that I am madly in love with, because we were not permitted to. But I snuck and took what I could, so enjoy.

I just wanted to write a bit about my favorite pieces like Autumnal Cannibalism which was so hysterical to me. I know cannibalism isn’t supposed to be funny but it makes me crack up seeing a knife jabbed in a figures stomach area while melting into liquid goo. In the painting, when you look really closely you can see so much that goes on like the two people looking like a female and male entwining and eating each other. The female (which I thought it was) sprouts out like jelly, liquidy white stuff and the male scoops parts of her up with a spoon and the other arm pinches what looks like her waist as if it its erotic for him. This is just my little take on it, I could be completely wrong and I’m no where of a genius artist like Dali. I also noticed in the back of the painting was a little village looking like its drying up. I always wondered if this piece meant that cannibalism would save the little village from dying off… by eating the meat of others with sides of apple skins?! You can see the forest is decaying and makes you wonder if cannibalism would make that little village flourish.

My other favorite includes Metamorphosis of Narcissus. It’s the painting with the man sitting and crouching over and there is a figure that looks identical from far but when you come closer you can plainly see it’s a hand holding up a cracked egg and in the crack is a flower budding out of it. Between the 2 figures are naked people dancing and basking in their beauty. There are also ants in the corner. I’ve noticed a lot of my fave Dali paintings has his infamous ants. Maybe it’s him representing the cycle of life since creatures like ants have a huge part in the ecosystem and small things like ants move huge objects. Meanwhile humans are immensely huge compared to ants and what do we really do with our weight besides sit and watch tv… well thankfully not all of us.

    Pady,
My appreciation for Salvador Dali goes all the way back to when I was introduced to Art History 101. The two pieces of work that I am the most fond of are “The persistence of Memory and “The Disintegration of the Persistence of Memory,” Both of which are in my presence albeit in print. I wish time had permitted me a visit to MOMA. Hopefully, I can get a full glimpse next time he graces New York.

Not all of these belong to Dali.

Yeah the exhibit was pretty awesome… too bad it is not there anymore.

Got something to say?
