Cosmetic Surgery:Beauty and You.
September 4, 2008
It’s in the magazines, news, on television, movies, Hollywood, Bollywood and just about everywhere you look. A pretty face, a slender frame and sizeable perky breasts are society’s basics for a “beautiful woman,” and people are increasingly more willing to succumb to these weak perceptions each year. Even men are considering and going through with cosmetic surgery to fit the trim and youthful appearance desired by so many. Male pectoral implants, calf implants, rhinoplasty, facelifts, eyelifts and tummy tucks are just a few of the popular procedures.
One’s body image, or perception of how they look, often controls their life and is reflected in their personality and treatment of those they come in contact with. If a person is not happy with the way they look they often project it through negative body language or some other form of communication. There may be patients who will never be satisfied with their bodies no matter how much surgery they receive or feel that their life will completely change after plastic surgery. Men and women should not view plastic surgery as a cure-all for any self-esteem and sexuality woes.
Many people ask their surgeon what can be done or what can I hope for, the real question that should be asked is, what will be done, what is the chance of real damage, and if it happens, what might the extent of it be? Many people believed that just because it is done everyday that there is no risk of damage. Plastic surgeons are physicians who have had extensive training in delicate repair of skin, but nobody can break the integrity of normal skin without leaving a mark. Ask to see their book of before and after pictures. You may wish to speak to the surgeons other patients to see in real person what the effects have been. Ask whatever other questions concern you. Prepare a list, it does not matter how many questions you have or how trivial you feel they are, ask them! You are the one that in the end must live with the results.
Liposuction, which is removing fat cells from the body to produce smoother contours, has been around for years and only today doctors and researchers discovering more and more of the risks that are involved. The major problem is if too much fat and fluid are removed you can go into shock, bleed internally, or worst of all die. Also, when the procedure is done correctly there are many cases where the skin is dimpled and the skin is left sagging.
Retin A is a drug that is used to help with cosmetic appearance and in surgeries. It is used for its ability to replace a pale color with some pinkness, it causes the blood vessels beneath the surface to grow, which improves the skin texture and promotes collagen formation. This has the effect of plumping up the skin and filling out fine wrinkles. The major problem with Retin A is that the treatment leaves the skin susceptible to sunburn, and too much of it can cause redness and peeling.
In today’s society without a doubt, attractiveness aids in social acceptance. Recent studies have shown that persons of pleasing appearance are accepted more readily by peers and by seniors and are more, successful. This maybe true anywhere in the work force, dating and social nightlife; good looks are often helpful in receiving more attention as well. To achieve this social satisfaction, many often look to plastic surgery to take away that extra lump or bump, or improve some other fault one might find with them.
Americans now spend an alarming $15bn a year on cosmetic surgery in a beautification frenzy, more than twice what they contributed to Aids programmes in the past decade.
I would be very grateful if you could share your story/ comments or perspectives on this subject. Thank You.

Got something to say?

I had a nose job done and i love it. I really dont care what people think, i’m so much happier and comfortable now. It is very true however, that it gives you a boost in self esteem. If that’s what make you happy, go for it.
In regards to the subject being discussed, I strongly feel that people should opt for plastic surgery if there is a serious physical abnormality, In many cases this is not the issue. Whar might be the the problem however is that these very individuals get many types of surgeries done to various parts of the body that they themselves are not comfortable with, hence, a body dismorphic issue might be in question.
