A One Million Dollar Suit! What Nonsense.
August 28, 2008
After reading in www.guyanatimesgy.com that WRHM filed against NCN for airing some of the Olympic Games, I started to laugh and laugh and laugh. It was just the Olympic Games and this is Guyana. This is not the US where any and everyone sue for anything. As many stations that could have carried the game the better it would have been for the people. So who care if NCN did not buy into the contractual agreement? I am sure a lot of kids got to see the games through NCN and were inspired to do bigger and better things. So it is all about money not the people. Well this is one of the reasons why Guyana continues to suffer. The same way some upper Berbicians get television from Suriname, the Surinamese station should sue for that but it would be just silly. In the end does it matter, Carifesta came and is now going and Guyanese all around Guyana turned off their television sets because they were disappointed with the opening ceremony but they tuned in to watch the games so who should pay for that?

Got something to say?

Lara,
If having kids in Guyana see the Olympic games is such a big deal why didn’t NCN buy into the contractual agreement? Nothing is free, especially when it comes to business.
The games could also be seen on the web.
Reader,
How many Children in Guyana have access to the internet and more so speeds that support streaming videos? The point of the article was to highlight that this is Guyana, they have bigger things than the games to squabble over and some stupid contractual rights. Carifesta comes and everyone turns off their sets.
Lara and whoever “Anonymous” is, you need to check yourself. Constantly attacking the government of Guyana for failing to follow the rules and policies and here you choose to support the breaking of international laws.
It seems that you both just love to pick and choose your battles that fit your cause or situation and you are not in support of growth.
There are many long term effects for violation of media licenses like these. It first prevents the country from airing other future events that might be of interest to the people of Guyana and at the same time the international media will be very reluctant to publish events occurring in the Guyana. You have to maintain international relationships every time. Guyana cannot afford to go to war nor can they sustain the hatred of other more powerful countries.
Stop being so short sighted!
War! What the hellThis has nothing to do with international relationships. A million dollar law suit? The olympics is on Youtube my friend. Guyanese are not interested in their own regional event. Have you read the opinions lately. Friend, don’t misconstrue what I am hinting at. I understand what took place but a million dollar law suit. Give me a break.
Anonymous,
I understand the situation in Guyana with technology. That little bit of information was there for those who actually have access and are not aware that they can view it on the web.
The point is NCN broadcast the content unlawfully when they shouldn’t have, and that precedes any reason why the content should be aired. And when you are the one calling the price you will feel differently.
All in all NCN is a media company; they should know better. And being in Guyana should not be an excuse to plead ignorant.
