CARIFESTA X – Scam in Guyana…Everyone is dismayed!!!

August 21, 2008

Guyana has a population of 751,218 with 29 countries participating and only 6000 free tickets available for the opening ceremony at the Providence Stadium. However, tickets for the Super Concerts will have to be bought. What was the government thinking? This is not about first come first serve because I stood there for four days [August 18th- 21st] and could not obtain a ticket, neither anyone else in the line. However it is rumored that the government officials who were supposed to distribute the tickets to those in line kept most for their families and friends.

According to Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Dr. Frank Anthony stated in Sunday Stabroek that free tickets will be made available from Monday 18th. Unfortunately, they’ve had a late delivery [the tickets reached Guyana late evening on August 18th]. Thousands of Guyanese stood there in heaving lines from 6am to 6pm in the scorching sun, no tickets, no experience, losing a days work and additional expenses. People covered the National Cultural Center, Sophia Exhibition Center, Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, Theatre guild Playhouse and the Carifesta Secretariat awaiting their free tickets, which do not even exist because they were long gone. I went to several locations, everyone cursing, fretting, agitated over the situation because the line is there at a standstill and nobody could get a ticket. This was expected of Bharrat Jagdeo, this is how we celebrate our history, culture and unity as a nation…Well, we just have to wait for the media now.

Farouk, where on earth did you expect 751,218 people to sit. Any venue wherever in the world that host an event will always have limited capacity. Some people expect miracles to performed, this is not like feeding a crowd with a loaf of bread and fish.

    Hey Brian ,
People dont expect miracles especially not from Guyana. Tickets for Carifesta was free and should have been available to the genaral public, instead they sold it. Unfortunately the opening ceremony was a trash, people hardly attend ’cause they know what to expect from Guyana and those who really intrested in going stood outside by the fence and gate begging to go in.Hundreds of seats was available but they would not let others in. Maybe god has his reasons why-rain poured and most events from the Opening ceremony had to be cancelled. Were they really afraid to let citizens in? I saw people in the stadium smoking pot, the place was stink of it but no one will open their mouth to say a word.

I heard people saying that they purchase their tickets from the security guards from the National stadium for 6000 GYD and had to purchase liquor worth over 4000 to get in.

Robert Persaud and gang needs some awards for this. Maybe we can purchase a few for a buck for them.

Got something to say?
