Kris Gounden of Howard Beach speaks his mind

August 14, 2008

Kris Gounden - \"We demand equal treatment.\"Today I heard a terrible story of how bad things in Howard Beach was for others. The dozens of stories (from Brooklyn, Queens, Florida, New Jersey, even the West Indies!) I heard from many of the people who now supports our family’s cause to live in peace because they were not able to a few years back Does anyone wonder why these stories never get reported in the media? West Indians / Caribbeans have ‘NEVER’ stood up to this abuse before, always forced to move out! Last month in Florida, a Guyanese professional told me how he had to move because he could’nt take the police constantly ticketing him in Richmond Hill while others (non-minorities) did not! I am asking anyone and everyone that knows of someone that lived in Ozone Park- Richmond Hill- Woodhaven - Cityline- East NY- Rockaway, to talk about their experiences. The media just wants us to dismiss our history.

I cant believe the amount of people that are interested in our situation here in Howard Beach and the amount of support we have gotten so far. A Jamaican realtor in Far Rockaway told me of his past with the Howard Beach community ( it was’nt good!), and YES he did support my stand to defend our home!

When I first moved To Howard Beach, Councilman Joe Addabbo’s contractor said ‘Kris, you’re not like the other indians!’. I was thinking of a response (other than ‘you’re an idiot’), instead i said ‘you think so?’. I kept quiet alot during those times, especially when Councilman Joe Addabbo came to my home and when we spoke.
Am I the only one?

Kris
