August 9, 2008

The world should now understand that China is a very big and significant player , not only culturally and commercially, but in every aspect. The Chinese have the right to be very proud of what they have achieved. The 2008 Olympics promotes China in the world’s most pulsating economies, promising markets, and as the host of most spectacular show on Earth.

World leaders including China’s President Hu Jintao, French President Nicolas Sarkozy, U.S president George W. Bush and film actor Jackie Chan attended the four-hour ceremony at Beijing’s emblematic Bird’s Nest Stadium, along with about 90,000 spectators. However, it was President George W. Bush marking his first time sitting at the Olympics opening ceremony away from his homeland.

The Seven feet five inches tall NBA Basketball star Yao Ming walk alongside a little 9- year-old Lin Hao, a survivor of the May 12th earthquake in Sichuan that killed about 70,000. An estimated 7000 to 9000 athletes from 204 countries marched in the parade of the nations. They walked through paint before walking across a vinyl scroll, leaving footprints to mark their passage.

Li Ning, a gymnast stunned the world with gravity-defying turns and somersaults lit the Olympic cauldron after “space-walking” over the heads of 91,000 spectators at the National Stadium on Friday night. Li, 45, was carried about 225 feet to the roof level on a harness and then mimicked walking as he followed the approximately 800-yard circumference of the upper level before touching his torch to a pipe that fed the cauldron that will burn over the stadium the next 16 days.

The Olympics opening ceremony was created by Zhang Jigang- a choreographer and General in the People’s Liberation Army and Zhang Yimou- the Oscar nominated director of films such as “House of the flying daggers” with 15000 people in the cast and 13 months of rehearsing time. They have mixed power, impact and a huge cast performing formation choreography flawlessly in what looked like Modern History.

By any standard, the Opening Ceremony in Beijing will surpass any start to any games in history. The most expensive opening ever was four years ago in Athens, when the Greeks spent a reported $30 million on their torch-lighting rite. The Chinese have surpassed them by a factor of 10. With an estimated $300 million budget, a seemingly never-ending cast of 15,000, and a fireworks display that’s rumored to be the biggest in history, the Bird’s Nest, home to the opening ceremonies, will redefine Olympic spectacle. . The Olympics games hold such significance and respect in China that hosting it for the first time is a symbol of the Country’s power and place in the world.
