The Real Problem Facing Guyana is a Self-Profiting Government
August 8, 2008
Cost of living in Guyana has assumed an unbearable up surging, and this has been so far over a decade. Guyana on the whole has been imparting inflation; the government has done very little to cushion the impact on the economy. Financial policies are not geared to alleviate the suffering of the poor Guyanese people. The burden of the consumption tax on fuel, for instance, has been over priced. Despite the fact that rising fuel prices have a negative effect impact on agriculture, industries, and for that matter the entire economy, the government has been adamant on its’ severe economic policies.
The nagging question is: what has been done by the government of Guyana to alleviate the sufferings of the poor? There has been an incremental increase in cost of living, salaries and wages with which workers are unable to make a decent living. Corruption and futile government are almost inevitable in a poor country. The standard statistical measure of extreme poverty is an income of less than $3 USD per day which is being described as moderate poverty.
There are thousands of individuals from urban and rural area who are desperately pleading with the government to increase wages and salaries because besides food, the majority of Guyanese families can no longer afford to buy other necessities/ social services. Instead of the government solving the problems, they are implementing the policy of liberalization and privatization hoping it would strengthen import and export on the dependent economy. These exploitative policies are the grounds that trigger the sinking of the local economy towards depression. During meetings/ speeches/ lectures and rallies the government diverts the real issues affecting the people and instead blames the problems on the bandits in Guyana.
Existing problems faced in the urban and rural areas of Guyana are: corrupt government, deteriorated infrastructure, inadequate community services, poor sanitation, poor water supply, no drainage and irrigation, poverty, crime, brain drain, HIV/Aids, AK 47 guns disappear from the army, high profile crimes committed- no clue as to who did it, prostitution, domestic violence, the ruling elite continued with the con artistry, innocent get killed while the wanted men escaped- no need for interrogation, road carnage increased, racism, worldwide donations to Guyana is always used for personal benefits and usually unaccounted for.
Guyanese are living in extreme poverty and are chronically hungry. The lack of access to food, basic health services, secondary education and self- dependent growth is almost impossible. You can’t expect anything from Government because they don’t know how to rule a country and doesn’t care if all the Guyanese people are dying of starvation/ poverty as long as they are not starving.
