Religion: An Introspective Analysis

August 4, 2008

I know some of you who are reading this and maybe wondering if I’m an atheist, does it matter? Actually I’m not but I don’t categorize myself in any religion because I don’t believe in things that are just supposed to be believed in because others say so. I abide by my morals and try to be as honest and loving as a normal being. I put out into the world what I would like to receive and I’m never ashamed of the mistakes or situations I get into because others may talk about it and call it “sinful”. Seriously, enjoy your life… because then you’d be one miserable person paranoid about what everyone else is thinking about. I focused on religion this time but there are many topics that make people feel the same way, coercing others to believe what “they” do, in the name if “God” (or whatever you call your imminent power). People go to wars and horrific things and use the name of “God” to make others do the same. I wonder if no one ever thought about the notion of “God” would we still be the society we are today. Would there still be chaos in the mix – underhandedly lying to others how one religion/belief is the ‘right one’ because “religion is supposed to be a beautiful thing”? My grandfather used to tell me, we have 5 fingers and neither of them are the same length… just as our fingers, each one of us are different with our own beliefs, which we should respect.

The things I seriously dislike about religion… I can basically write a novel on the weird people that I have encountered that are fanatically obsessed with their beliefs and are unwilling to hear anything else that contradict their own beliefs, which are usually hypocritically ignorant. For a prime example, what I call the “Jesus Freaks” on the train yelling about “Jesus died for all our sins”. Who seriously wants to be annoyed at 7 in the morn or any time for that matter, yelling on top of their lungs about Jesus, or any religious icon? I use this example but in every culture and every religion, there are people that feel the need to preach and annoy the world with their banshee voice. Please, if your one of those people… STOP! If your religion is so awesome, why do you need to remind people and try to coerce them into converting?

Another issue I have a problem with, people who don’t believe in evolution and start petitions at school that “evolution is blasphemy”. I mean seriously? The truth is, there are proof everywhere that we are an evolutionary species, and if your in denial – we did evolve from monkeys. Check out your coccyx, it’s the remainder of your ancestors tail bone, not to mention the other parts in our body that are obsolete like the appendix and tonsils.

Why do people feel the need to convert others? Like I mentioned before, if your religion is so awesome, why need to scream at people about it. It’s as if you’re a street vendor trying to sell religion at “a good price”. What purpose does that serve? If people want to believe in their own faith, who should say otherwise and if you are one of those people that feels your religion and faith is better in everyone else’s and you look down upon others because of that, what are you thinking? We are not in a mind-controlled society… fascists must be your best friends. My advice, relax. Just as you are allowed to believe whatever you want, a schizophrenic can believe there are pink upside down penguins are the voice of their “God”. How can you explain it to that individual otherwise? Why do you think by you saying such to another person, they’ll automatically say “yes” and follow you like you’re their sheepherder. Don’t get me wrong there are people in society that are “sheeple” but they are entitled to what they believe as well.

Another aspect of religion is the institutions. Why do people feel bigger is better? There are so many churches, temples, synagogues, masjids and whatever else I’m forgetting. So many tower over regular sized buildings. I also noticed if religious institutions are next to each other they seem to be in competition by making their building bigger, shiner and tend to have their religious symbols the biggest possible. Are they trying to subliminally say “OURS IS BETTER BECAUSE IT’S BIGGER?” Do people actually fall for that?

You know what really cracks me up though about “religiously pious people”? They are usually individuals that make everyone else in the world feel badly about their lives in the meantime, those “oh so pious ones” are doing even worse “sins” and just hiding it better than the rest of us who are honest about it. We’re human; we’re bound to make mistakes. It’s a part of life. Be proud of both the bad and the good that you’ve done, there’s always something to learn from each circumstance and experience.

    Pady,
With regards to your issues, and I believe you have lots “Jesus Freaks” you just sound ignorant just by using that term.
I see another issue you have is, STOP!!! who are you to say that to someone, we all have the right to speak freely. Think about it, these people that “preach” in public, deep down in their heart believe that they know the truth about God (or a higher power) and all they want to do is spread it. If you knew that something bad was going to happen wouldn’t you want everyone to know, it holds the same concept.
As far as evolution is concerned if you believe you came from a monkey then I guess you are a monkey….I like being a human being created in Gods image. Now I believe that most of us just have different and distinctive features, from Black, White, Indian and whoever else…..maybe there was a race that was more like the monkey “Atlantis Monkeys”
You really believe that there is a building competition going on with all these different religions…that funny to me, Is it wrong to have your place of worship grand and beautiful, its like your home lots of us when we purchase our homes we want and end up getting a big house with a big yard and all these extremities that we barely ever use.
I believe no one can force anyone to believe what they don’t want to, also If you feel bad or guilty about something you did that has nothing to do with anyone one else but you and your cognizance.

    ” God did not create man, man in his ignorance created god” George Politzer{French Philosopher}

This statement is so true. Even though you said that you are not an atheist, you raise some very interesting questions.

There is a saying that “youth is wasted on the young” You definitely contradict this statement, since you, as a young person, is opening discussions that many are either scared or refuse to discuss. Keep it up.

As for me I am A PROUD ATHEIST and I am never scared to discuss religion. Remember atheist is the reason there is reason. Most religious people are disrespectful to those who are atheist.

I used to be a religious fanatic when I was a kid and even wanted to be a priest. However, I was saved and became a proud atheist.

I live my life just trying to do good to my fellow human beings.

Call me, I would like to discuss this more with you

Well, to each his own, no?

Ahhh, those “Jesus Freaks”! To defend Christianity, they are simply trying to “save us”, which can get extremely annoying at 7 in the morning or after a rough day at the work. They are some of those people who need to impose their self-righteousness on everyone else - sometimes these fanatics are not even part of any religious organization, just members of our own household. In the same vein, I can’t stand those people who decide to have a 3-5 day jag that goes on at 11pm AT NIGHT. Seriously, the whole neighborhood does not need to listen to passages from the Bhagwad Gita - it gets a little overbearing. Sometimes I seriously feel like throwing rocks at their houses, LOL

One thing I don’t get with religion is that there is supposed to be “unity”, but instead I mostly see division. This has been happening not only in the Hindu community, but in the Christian community as well. Whenever the leaders of a church/temple has a disagreement they leave and start their own church/temple. They are starting to flood the community like roti shops on every block.

Interesting quote Chuck. Sometime ago I read something about man creating religion out of fear (I think it was from a philosophy class I took in college).

There seems to be a ying & yang in every aspect of life: man & woman, night & day, religion & science, God & Devil, etc. The presence of both ying & yang creates some kind of harmony, maybe? What would it be like in the absence of religion?

Like Anand said to each his own, we all have our views on religion and God…whose to say who is right and who is wrong.
Chuck you quoted George Politzer “God did not create man, man in his ignorance created god” you choose to believe this theory just like I choose to believe the bible, is there a difference? You’re still putting your trust in someone.

I also believe people in general Christians and Hindus alike put too much into religion. Religion is about faith not about how you dress, or how much times you go to church or if you speak to your neighbor or if you give to charity….Its about the relation you have with God, not people and just to note I know most religious fanatics are only doing what they do for show and it is pathetic and that’s what gives “religion” a bad name.

I believe the world is too complex to have just formed itself, I believe in a higher power (Jesus to be specific), things don’t just happen even science can prove that.
And I am PROUD TO BE A CHRISTIAN

I am not quite sure about the existence of god? It seems like the early egyptians had a significant role on the development of polytheism and montheism and this comes long before Christ walked the earth. It seems like the development of god from my studies came out of man not being able to explain his immediate surroundings, thus he atttributed the nature around him to a being that existed only figuratively (a perfect being that is) an entity that can do all things that were impossible to the creator of that entity.

    Sofly,
Everyone has their own opinions, no need to get bent about mine. You have yours and i was just simply stating what i dislike about it. No one’s telling you what to believe in and what not to. Just as you have your beliefs we all can agree everyone’s different, like I stated in my introduction.

    Chuck,
Thanks for your imput. We’ll definetly talk about it more the next time i bump into you or email me about it.

    Annand,
I agree with you about the whole “unity” notion. There is a lot of division between different religious groups, i never understood that since they all claim to have the same “god”.

    Andrew,

I find Egyptian myth quite fascinating as well.
The whole monotheist vs. polytheist… well to me no religion [that i've heard about] is strictly monotheistic because they always have saints, holy ghosts, prophets and etc…

What’s the point talking about religion anyway? Does it ever get anyway? No! People can’t have a discussion about religion because most are ignorant of the other’s views on the subject, so why bother?

At the end of the day you have your believers and your non-believers. The believers will go back to thinking everyone else is going to HELL and their God will save them, and the non-believers will go back to thinking what fools the believers are, and that science will one day prove everything.

So what are we left with? A power struggle between two sides that will never end. That’s how it’s always been and will never change.

“We’re all atheists about most of the gods we believe in…

Some of us, just go one god further.” -Richard Dawkins

I just hope you all realize that borders are just imaginary lines.
No matter where you step, its all just dirt.

Got something to say?
