Celebrating the Raising of the Guyana Flag in Lower Manhattan Saturday May 31 2008
June 1, 2008
Yesterday, May 31st 2008, Guyanese living across in the United States had the utmost privilege of letting the National Flag of Guyana soar in unison to that of the United States in Lower Manhattan.
The event was celebrated by about 400 Guyanese, most of who reside around New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. The day was accompanied by a rich cultural celebration from local Guyanese musical artists, cultural dancers, and local political figures among many others.
Although the event was planned as an outdoor celebration, the rain made sure that did not happen. Thanks to Felecia Persaud and her colleagues who collaborated in planning the entire event, we were allowed to enjoy the celebration in the architecturally decorated domed foyer of the Smithsonian National Museum of Native Americans which is located adjacent to location of where the flag would be raised. After the cultural proceedings, the celebration took to the outdoors by which time the rain has subsided and the raising of the flag went on as planned.
As a Guyanese living the in the United States, it was very proud day and this was reflected in the faces in everyone who attended. Most of us who left Guyana, came to the united states seeking a more comfortable and financially secured life among many other reasons but over the years we a grown in numbers as one of the largest minority groups to have graced the shores of the this county that embodies freedom. There are not many places in the free world where minority groups can raise their national flag and sing praises to the home that gave life unto them. But in the United States we can! How cool is that!
I hope that next year, the event will be celebrated by many more Guyanese who were unable to attend or were not aware of happenings. In a few days from now we will be able to upload the entire even on the videos at Baiganchoka.com for all to see.
Many thanks to Felicia Persaud and colleagues for making this event possible
