The Surging Cost of Rice Globally: What might be the resulting implications for developing Caribbean nations.
May 9, 2008

Increasing starvation for one will be experienced across the Caribbean because rice as all caribbeanites are aware of is part of our staple diet. Like Haiti and now Africa, food riots are quite promising in the near foreseeable months in Guyana, Brazil etc.
What can be done to ameliorate the crisis immediately? Governments in the Caribbean need to immediately truncate all rice exports out of the Caribbean based on the sustainable needs of Caribbeanites. With the already increased cost of food in the Caribbean, nations need to form closer alliances and share the burden. The cost of staple foods needs to be standardized. Crop farmers should be provided additional incentives to plant larger areas and to sell their crops locally. Countries in the Caribbean that do not farm and depend on imports should look to neighboring countries in the Caribbean to purchase the necessary staples rather than from countries in Asia.
