Blogger arrested for accusations against the Malaysian Prime Minister. A parallel to Guyanese politics?

May 6, 2008

Bloggers more and more are getting into the spotlight for anti government content placed on their websites. The case of this Malaysian Blogger is no different when he accused the Malysian Prime Minister and his wife of involvement in a murder.

Watch the Video and share your thoughts in regards to a comparison with the recent run-in with CN Sharma and the anti government remarks on his Television show that led to his shutdown by President Barrat Jagdeo. Is this a case that parallels Guyanese politics? Should readers depend on high Powered media feeds or should bloggers have the right of free press? As a blogger, I am concerned the about relationship between censorship and the government because as we all know the media powerhouses are all about ratings?

Andrew

Does anyone know if there is a FREEDOM OF SPEECH act in Malaysia?

“The Sedition Act in Malaysia is a law prohibiting discourse deemed as seditious. The act was originally enacted by the colonial authorities of British Malaya in 1948. The act criminalises speech with “seditious tendency”, including that which would “bring into hatred or contempt or to excite disaffection against” the government or engender “feelings of ill-will and hostility between different races”. The latter provision includes the questioning of certain portions of the Constitution of Malaysia, namely those pertaining to the Malaysian social contract, such as Article 153, which deals with special rights for the bumiputra (Malays and other indigenous peoples, who comprise over half the Malaysian population).”

Here is another blogger who has been arrested:

“Earlier in the month police arrested blogger Nathaniel Tan for a comment posted on his blog alleging corruption on the part of a government Minister.”

No government wants to read any kind of negative press on themselves. Everything on the web spreads like a virus regardless if it’s true or not.

It is true that everything on the web spreads but at the same time there are more appropriate ways of doing things like this. It would have been more appropriate for the local police authority to investigate the accusations and then publish their report.

If this was Guyana, President Jagdeo would be handling this case!

Cindy I can only laugh with you in your response as I am sure everyone is remembering the recent Channel 6 case.

malaysia is a seriously backward nation in a lot of the silly laws they have on the books and the zeal in which they go about enforcing them
and speaking of the police, there was a case where a certain minister wife showed up dead at a certain hospital in a certain country on the coast of south america. that was the first and last we heard of it…you can find out more of that certain minister on our site http://www.propagandapress.org
should we be arrested for saying we believe he either killed her or know who did?
these so.called leaders are really full of themselves and it’s getting old. time for a change

Got something to say?
