Jonestown: the event that earned Guyana a page in history books

April 14, 2008

The following videos are from NBC’s report on the events that occurred in Jonestown, Guyana almost thirty years ago. The reason why we chose to post these videos are for the simple fact that they serve as a grim reminder of what can happen when a government is not adequately monitored. It seems like the events at Jonestown could have been avoided if the actions of the government were scrutinize by the people as is in the nature of a true democracy.

The question I have to ask is: what has changed in Guyana in regards to a government that considers the welfare of the people first or a people that considers a country before them? Not much! It seems like thirty years later in light of the recent events at Lusignan and Bartica; I am reminded of the capriciousness of a government to be ingenuous to the people they serve and lack of unity among a people to initiate change other that of gathering sporadically to censure a government that does not represent their basic needs. Can anyone hypothesize as to what Guyana would look like twenty or thirty years from now? It’s a question that leaves me devoid of answers.

Andrew
