Eid-e-Milad on March 20th: Our celebration in Guyana
March 21, 2008
Muslims across the world celebrated Eid-e-Milad on March 20th, 2008. Eid-e-Milad is the birth of our Holy Prophet Muhammad and also the anniversary of his death. The main congregation in Berbice held their worship at the Sunnatul Mosque where more than 2000 people from my community attended and offered prayers throughout the night and day sending peace and blessings in our Holy Prophet Muhammad’s name.
The Imam gave the congregation advice on upholding the sanctity of life and encouraged the Muslim community to do well and end past animosities. He then went to the Khutbah and led the congregational prayers, which was the central part of the worship. When the Imam declared Eid-e-Milad, everyone hugged and greeted each other in brotherly and sisterly love.
Muslims came together and prepared and distributed meals by the thousand to schools, orphanages, widows, destitute homes, prisoners, disabled, handicap homes, neighbors and relatives. Some Muslims from affluent families donated money, clothing, footwear, medications and the necessary essentials.
The devotees of Islam, including women and children, participated in a night long of special prayers at mosques and at their homes and after spent evening with their families. Most Muslims fasted on this day from sunrise to sundown for our beloved prophet.
Thursday March 20th was a public holiday in Guyana. The Newspapers and television stations brought out special issues- the media aired special Eid-e-Milad programmes highlighting the significance of the day. All intuitions were closed and green moon and star flags waved atop of public and private buildings throughout Guyana.
In addition, Special prayers were offered in all mosques across Guyana, sending praises and blessings in our holy prophet’s name. Children raised their voices to Islamic chants [songs] about the way of life of the prophet and recited poems. Special prayers were offered for the prosperity, integrity and solidarity of Guyana.
Various religious, social and cultural organizations held programmes on Eid-e-Milad. The speakers highlighted the congregations with aspects of the life and teachings of the Holy Prophet Muhammad. The speakers also urged upon the people to follow the teachings of the holy prophet and to get rid of worldly problems in addition following the teachings of The Holy Quran.
