February 28, 2008
According to a editorial publish in the Kaieteur News, Germany will grant eight million Euros to Pan Caribbean Partnership against HIV/AIDS. Countries that will benefit from this grant are Haiti, Dominican Republic, Barbados, Belize, Jamaica, Eastern Caribbean Islands and St Marten. Where is Guyana mentioned in all of this? It is not as if Guyana is devoid of the disease. View the article.
According to the following report from http://hivinsite.ucsf.edu/InSite 12000 people are living with HIV/AIDS in Guyana as of 2005. In a country with less than a million people, this is significant more so that neighboring countries are Brazil and Venezuela and Suriname have a significant HIV/AIDS population and crossing borders are within arms length.. The report albeit not accurate, subtracting three years, is within proximity of the current data. According to Minister of Health, Dr. Leslie Ramsammy Guyana’s aggressive response to HIV/AIDS has seen the epidemic stabilizing over the past three years as it pursues the goal of having no child born with HIV. While this is good, the Spread of HIV continues to gain Momentum in the Caribbean and according to http://www.pepfar.gov/press/81579.htm, Guyana is listed as an Emergency Plan 15 focus country, which means, the HIV/AIDS situation in Guyana is at epidemic proportions so I don’t know how about the conflicting report by Leslie Ramsammy. But here are the 2007 numbers. Tell me What you think considering the 750,000 population.
Emergency Plan Results in Guyana. Taken from http://www.pepfar.gov/press/81579.htm
# of individuals receiving antiretroviral treatment as of September 30, 2007: 2,100
# of HIV-infected individuals who received palliative care/basic health care and support in FY2006 (including TB/HIV): 2,900
# of orphans and vulnerable children (OVCs) who were served by an OVC program in FY2006: 800
# of pregnant women receiving prevention of mother-to-child HIV transmission (PMTCT) services since the beginning of the Emergency Plan: 23,600
# of pregnant women receiving antiretroviral prophylaxis for PMTCT since the beginning of the Emergency Plan: 262
# of individuals receiving counseling and testing (in settings other than PMTCT) in FY2006: 28,300
# of individuals reached with community outreach HIV/AIDS prevention programs that promote Abstinence and/or Being Faithful in FY2006: 33,900
# of individua ls reached with community outreach HIV/AIDS prevention activities that promote Condoms and related prevention services in FY2006: 25,000
# of USG condoms shipped in Calendar Year 2006: 0
Note: Numbers may be adjusted as attribution criteria and reporting systems are refined. Numbers above 100 are rounded to nearest 100.1 Total results combine individuals reached through downstream and upstream support. 2 It is possible that some individuals were counseled and tested more than once. 3 It is possible that some pregnant women received antiretroviral prophylaxis more than once over the two-year period, e.g. HIV positive women who were pregnant more than once. 4 Number of individuals reached through downstream site-specific support includes those receiving services at U.S. Government-supported service delivery sites. 5 The Government of Guyana is committed to providing free condoms and does not require USG support for condom procurement. Through the Emergency Plan, the USG continues to provide technical assistance in support of the distribution program to non-traditional outlets.
Don’t you think Guyana should be included in the countries receiving aid to help fight HIV/AIDS?
With such a small population, it is critically important to agressively treat the disease because the close proximity fosters agressive encounters. Readers,do you not think such is the case?
