aristo’s rant - Nader a Spoiler?
February 26, 2008
After 8 years of the Bush administration, some people may agree that the U.S. is heading in the wrong direction.
A weakening dollar, foreclosures at record levels, and the projected recession by experts are just a few of the many issues that concern Americans and its foreign investors. Clearly, much of all the Presidential candidates’ message in the upcoming election is “change.”
Ralph Nader is an activist for consumer rights, and has announced his candidacy this past weekend. You may remember him as being labeled as the “spoiler” in the 2000 election for his role in the closeness of the Bush/Gore race in the State of Florida.
Let’s get to the point. Nader received about 98,000 votes in Florida in 2000. The Bush/Gore race was counted as close as 500 votes apart. With over 4 million coming out to vote in that state, it made the race razor close. Nader acted as a spoiler in two ways: (i) much of his votes would have gone to Gore, who we now learn would have been one of the “greenest” Presidents of our time (he shared honors of the Nobel Peace Prize last year), and (ii) the Gore campaign had to spend lots of time and money in swing states such as Washington to get the popular votes away from Nader to beat Bush. This took away from Gore’s efforts in bigger states, such as Florida.
In 2004, Nader ran yet again and got only 1/6 of the votes achieved in 2000 (under 500,000 nationwide). What is his true purpose for running in 2008?
Aside from the matter, although I am a Ron Paul supporter, I am not a Republican faithful. For those of you that believe all Republicans suck without doing your homework, go get some done on Ron Paul.
Getting back to the 2008 race, I believe Obama will win the Democratic nomination, and he stands for moderate change, something this country already shows that it will embrace. Nader, who calls for a vast change, will take some votes from Obama, but none from McCain. By getting in this race for a third straight and fruitless time, the only thing Nader can succeed in doing is handing the election to McCain and the Neo-Conservative Republicans on a silver platter. Congrats, Ralphie.
