The Non Noteworthy News
December 16, 2007
This morning I stumbled upon an article published Saturday, December 15th 2007 titled “CULTURE BOX, King’s Jewellery ad makes the cut.”
Now before I divulge into the specifics of the article I must comment on the constant erroneous grammatical errors that editors of this national publication fail to notice prior to printing for distribution and for this very reason I question the validity of good solid unbiased reporting. It seems to me that the publication is bent on quantity rather than quality (a fill the page so to speak initiative)… I take it as “our readers are not so intelligent anyway so why bother to get right. Just publish the damn thing, they would never notice. It’s all about increasing the profit margin”
Now to the article…. it is a must read. To summarize without contempt, the author describes a jewelry ad for the Christmas holiday as being one of the best published in the country for the Christmas season. Moreover author describes the individual who models in the ad as being someone pleasing to look at…wow …facial prejudice….specifically implying that other models so to speak were unpleasing to look at. Then came the symphony of plugging Kings as a must visit for the holiday with your “honeys.”
This article not only diminishes the already sub-standard quality of Stabroek News but also that of reporting and the character of reporters in general. It makes me question what is imperative and what is not to the effect on quality of life. Articles such as these should be not printed in nationally read news prints because they end up qualifying national journals as Hollywood style reporting removing pollitical and economical importance and ultimately downplaying the more important issues that a country has to address regarding its’ people. Most importantly, when articles such as the one I commented on keeps cycling, their effects eventually become realized when the near incumbent denizens or incumbent begin to partake in perfunctory gatherings for public entrepreneurship, as is the case with our current leadership in Guyana.

Got something to say?

The article was placed in “The Scene” section of the newspaper (Stabroek News). Is that “The Scene” in Guyana? The article didn’t need fourteen paragraphs to say that ad firms/agencies are raising the bar with their tv ads, which is a good thing. I’m happy to hear quality is improving, but don’t diminish the quality of your newspaper with a pointless article describing an ad most people have no time or interest in reading.
Instead talk about how such a feat impacts the country, and what the current quality level of tv ads is and how this one particular ad raises the bar and forces other ad agencies to follow suit. Don’t waste my time trying to describe how beautiful the girl in the ad looks - of course she must be “beautiful”; why else would she be in the ad?
Pointless article! And as Andrew said, quantity over quality.
Parkar..
My sentiments exactly!
